‘Iwájú’ trailer: Disney’s enticing limited series is set in a futuristic Nigeria

Disney has teamed up with storytelling collective Kugali for limited series, Iwájú: a thrilling new limited series that blends Pan-African culture with facets of science fiction.

The newly released trailer gives a glimpse into a show that looks one-of-a-kind, featuring flying cars, sinister villains, and an adorable robot chameleon. Set in Lagos, Nigeria, the animated series follows Tola (Simisola Gbadamosi), a young girl from a wealthy island and Kole (Siji Soetan), her tech-obsessed best friend, as the navigate hidden depths in their futuristic land. The show draws inspiration from the spirit of Lagos, applying the city’s culture to an imagined future brimming with technological advancements and new challenges. The name of the series, “Iwájú“, is a Yoruba word that roughly translates to “the future”.

Disney’s chief creative officer said that the show will explore “deep themes of class, innocence and challenging the status quo”.

Iwájú will be streaming on Disney+ on Feb. 28.
