Why is everyone’s Spotify Wrapped ‘sound town’ Burlington, Vermont?

An overheard shot of Burlington in the fall.

Something happened this year in Burlington, Vermont, if anecdotal Spotify stats are to be believed. The city’s population of around 44,000 apparently listened to dozens of artists more than any other city on earth.

Spotify’s annual Wrapped project, released this morning, showed listeners their most-loved artists and songs of the year. But a feature called “My Sound Town” got even more specific about their taste by telling users what city in the world listened to the same artists they do.

According to users on X / Twitter, a disproportionate number of Spotify users were told that their city was Cambridge, Massachusetts, Berkeley California, and, especially, Burlington, Vermont.

The good folks in Burlington are apparently fans of Dolly Parton, boygenius, Death Cab for Cutie, The Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia, and Phish, Wilco, The Strokes, The Shins, Jenny Lewis, Maggie Rogers, Fleet Foxes, The National, and dozens of other indie bands.
